Why do you need to have your breast implants removed or revised?
There are a number of reasons women consider breast implant removal (explant) or revision surgery. You may have implants for breast reconstruction following breast cancer or breast augmentation. Reasons to consider explant surgery or revision include:
Rupture or deflation of the implant
Capsular contracture – when the tissue surrounding the implant has contracted. This can result in pain, asymmetry or distortion of the breast.
Malposition – the implant may be sitting in the wrong position
Rippling – ripples in the implant may be visible under the skin
Concern about Breast Implant Associated Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)
Symptoms of Breast Implant Illness (BII)

What is involved in the surgery for breast implant removal?
The procedure involves removing the breast implant and sometimes the implant capsule. Depending on the indication for removal or revision, the capsule may be altered or removed in part or completely.
Depending on why the implants were inserted and your personal preference, a breast lift may be required to improve the appearance of your breasts.
A/Prof Mak and Dr Graham do not perform replacement of implants following removal (revision augmentation). If you would like to have replacement implants following removal, A/Prof Mak or Dr Graham will involve a plastic surgeon.
